Assistant Area Sales Manager

Save job

A leading organisation in the fast-moving consumer goods sector is seeking an Assistant Area Sales Manager to join their Central Region team in Kuala Lumpur. This role offers you the opportunity to play a pivotal part in driving sales and operational excellence across general and modern trade channels, while nurturing a high-performing sales team. You will be empowered to shape business strategies, build brand awareness, and foster strong relationships with distributors and customers.

What you'll do:

As an Assistant Area Sales Manager based in Kuala Lumpur, you will be entrusted with overseeing both general trade and modern trade operations throughout the Central Region. Your day-to-day responsibilities will involve collaborating closely with your team to develop strategic business plans that drive profitability while maintaining high standards of professionalism. You will nurture brand awareness by engaging with customers, distributors, and internal stakeholders, ensuring that every interaction reflects the organisation’s commitment to quality. By conducting thorough market analyses, implementing effective sales management processes, monitoring KPIs, and providing guidance to your team members, you will create an environment where everyone feels supported in achieving shared goals. Your role also includes tracking market trends, analysing competitor activity, gathering valuable feedback from customers, and sharing these insights with top management for ongoing product enhancement. Success in this position requires a genuine passion for teamwork, a willingness to share knowledge, and an enthusiasm for helping others grow within a supportive network.

  • Manage overall sales performance for General Trade within assigned areas by ensuring profitability and sustainable growth through effective collaboration with team members.
  • Oversee Modern Trade operations by deploying promotional activities that enhance product visibility and customer engagement across multiple channels.
  • Develop comprehensive business plans including sales strategies and profit goals, aligning them with organisational objectives to achieve measurable results.
  • Enhance brand professionalism and service quality by building brand awareness in the market, fostering positive relationships with customers and partners.
  • Conduct territory and sales analyses by assessing results and adjusting strategies collaboratively to maximise market potential.
  • Implement sales management processes by sourcing and sharing market research to help the sales team identify key customers and prioritise prospects effectively.
  • Monitor performance KPIs of the sales team while motivating members to meet or exceed targets through supportive guidance and encouragement.
  • Manage, train, and provide overall guidance to the sales team within assigned territories or channels, promoting knowledge sharing and skill development.
  • Lead distributor sales teams to increase numeric and weighted distribution by fostering co-operative relationships with external partners.
  • Track market trends and competitor activity by gathering feedback from customers and sharing insights with internal teams for continuous improvement.

What you bring:

The ideal Assistant Area Sales Manager brings extensive experience from the FMCG industry—preferably within healthcare—and holds relevant academic qualifications such as a diploma in management or marketing. Your ability to communicate fluently in Bahasa Melayu, English, and Mandarin enables you to connect warmly with diverse stakeholders. You possess deep knowledge of distributor management practices essential for success in this role. Your gentle yet effective problem-solving skills allow you to nurture solutions collaboratively rather than assertively. Supportive leadership comes naturally to you; you guide your team members kindly while encouraging their growth through training opportunities. Your written communication is clear yet considerate; your verbal interactions are polite yet persuasive. You are highly motivated but channel this energy into creating an inclusive atmosphere where everyone feels valued. Organisation is one of your strengths—you manage tasks efficiently without losing sight of communal goals. Analytical thinking helps you plan sensitively while troubleshooting issues together with colleagues. Above all else, you build dependable relationships marked by honesty, empathy, loyalty, modesty, trustworthiness, reliability, professionalism—and always maintain high standards of integrity.

  • Possess at least a Diploma in Management, Marketing, Mass Communication or Business Administration or equivalent qualification with seven years’ experience in the FMCG industry; healthcare sector experience is preferred.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in written Bahasa Melayu at conversational level as well as spoken English; business-level Mandarin proficiency is required for liaising with Mandarin-speaking clients.
  • Show proven knowledge of distributor management as a mandatory requirement for this role.
  • Exhibit strong problem-solving abilities coupled with a gentle approach to making things happen through collaborative efforts.
  • Display supportive leadership qualities along with people management skills that foster trustworthiness among colleagues.
  • Present excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and Bahasa Malaysia while being able to connect empathetically across cultures.
  • Maintain high motivation levels with a results-oriented mindset that inspires enthusiasm within the team.
  • Be well-organised as a self-starter who can work dependably both independently and as part of an interdependent group; prioritise tasks efficiently even under pressure.
  • Apply analytical thinking combined with planning skills to troubleshoot challenges sensitively while supporting others.
  • Build strong inter-personal relationships across teams by demonstrating reliability, integrity, professionalism, warmth, and loyalty.
