BIY - Legal Counsel ( Data Privacy knowledge)

What you'll do:

As Legal Counsel - Data Privacy, you will immerse yourself in a variety of responsibilities that span contract review, negotiation, risk mitigation, and privacy compliance.

• Reviewing, drafting, and negotiating commercial contracts as well as other legal documents to ensure they are legally sound and mitigate potential risks effectively.
• Providing practical legal advice that is focused on business needs regarding day-to-day operational matters including commercial, insurance, and takaful issues in accordance with organisational policies and standards.
• Partnering with cross-functional teams to support contract negotiations while ensuring compliance with relevant laws and internal governance requirements.
• Contributing your legal expertise to various company projects as well as broader business initiatives assigned by the organisation.
• Supporting the implementation and maintenance of data protection governance frameworks such as conducting Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs), privacy reviews, and maintaining compliance documentation.
• Assisting with incident management processes including internal escalation procedures and preparing comprehensive data protection reports for both management and regulatory bodies.
• Collaborating closely with stakeholders across departments to foster an inclusive approach to legal risk management.
• Ensuring that all privacy-related activities align with global standards as well as local regulations such as Malaysian PDPA.
• Participating in training sessions or workshops aimed at enhancing knowledge around privacy compliance within the organisation.
• Maintaining up-to-date awareness of changes in privacy laws and regulations to proactively advise the business.

The ideal candidate for Legal Counsel Data Privacy brings proven experience navigating privacy compliance landscapes within commercial environments.

• Degree in Law, with 3-5 years of experience.
• Experience in data protection law including hands-on involvement with privacy compliance frameworks such as DPIAs and regulatory reporting.
• Proven ability to review, draft, and negotiate commercial contracts while mitigating legal risks effectively.
• Comprehensive understanding of Malaysian PDPA as well as global privacy standards relevant to multinational operations.
• Strong communication skills enabling you to explain complex legal concepts clearly to non-legal stakeholders across the organisation.
• Excellent interpersonal skills fostering collaborative relationships within cross-functional teams.
• Proactive attitude towards identifying potential risks or areas for improvement within existing governance frameworks.
• Commitment to ongoing learning through participation in training opportunities related to privacy law or contract management.
