Legal Counsel
The company operates as a leading consumer electronics and home appliances retailer, offering a wide range of products including electrical goods, IT devices, furniture, and lifestyle solutions. Its business model combines both physical retail stores and e-commerce channels, supported by flexible financing and instalment payment options to enhance customer accessibility. The organisation focuses on delivering value-driven retail experiences while managing supplier partnerships, store operations, logistics, and consumer services within a regulated, customer-centric environment.
Due to expansions plans, the company is looking to recruit a high caliber Legal Counsel to act as the in-house legal advisor to support business operations, ensuring strong contract management, regulatory compliance, and effective risk mitigation across the organisation. This role also oversees corporate governance, company secretarial coordination, and employment/industrial relations matters.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary legal advisor on corporate, employment, regulatory, and commercial matters
- Lead contract drafting, review, and negotiation across a wide range of agreements (commercial, tenancy, supplier, IT, marketing, etc.)
- Provide practical, business-oriented legal advice to internal stakeholders on day-to-day operations
- Manage employment and industrial relations matters, including disputes, domestic inquiries, and disciplinary panels
- Oversee legal compliance with applicable laws (e.g. Employment Act, PDPA, Consumer Protection, Companies Act)
- Advise senior management and Board on legal, people, and business risks
- Manage litigation, disputes, claims, and external counsel for optimal outcomes
- Support retail operations on tenancy agreements, store openings, relocations, and closures
- Ensure compliance in marketing activities, promotions, and consumer-related matters
- Coordinate corporate governance and company secretarial matters, including Board resolutions and statutory filings
- Oversee corporate insurance programmes and manage claims with insurers and relevant stakeholders
- Build and maintain strong relationships with regulators, external lawyers, and business partners
Requirements
- LLB (Bachelor of Laws); additional qualifications (e.g. MBA / HR) are an advantage
- Minimum 5 years of relevant legal experience (corporate, commercial, employment, or regulatory)
- Prior in-house experience preferred (retail, FMCG, e-commerce industries advantageous)
- Strong knowledge of Malaysian laws and regulations (Companies Act, Employment Law, PDPA, etc.)
- Proven contract drafting and negotiation skills
- Skilled in stakeholder management and cross-functional collaboration
