Save job

A growing organisation is seeking a Regional Legal Counsel to join their headquarters in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. This is an opportunity for you to play a pivotal role in shaping the legal landscape of a rapidly expanding fintech and lending business across Southeast Asia. You will be at the forefront of market entry into Indonesia, overseeing legal setup and licensing, while also providing daily legal and regulatory guidance for operations spanning MY, ID, and other jurisfictions.

What you'll do:

As Regional Legal Counsel – Fintech and Lending, you will immerse yourself in both strategic projects and day-to-day operations that span several Southeast Asian markets.

  • Oversee and coordinate the complete legal structure and setup of a new fintech business in Indonesia, ensuring all regulatory requirements are met for successful market entry.
  • Act as the primary internal liaison with specialised external counsel in Indonesia to facilitate smooth communication and effective resolution of complex legal matters.
  • Manage the end-to-end application processes for all necessary fintech licences with Indonesian regulatory bodies such as OJK and Bank Indonesia.
  • Establish robust compliance frameworks, localised policies, and operational guidelines to ensure day-one readiness for new market operations.
  • Provide actionable legal advice to executive management regarding corporate operations, risk management strategies, and commercial transactions across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of agreements including loan contracts, corporate partnerships, vendor arrangements, employment terms, and other commercial documents.
  • Advise on debt recovery processes, dispute resolution strategies, and consumer-facing legal issues to protect organisational interests while maintaining customer trust.
  • Proactively research, monitor, and master evolving micro-lending and peer-to-peer (P2P) lending regulations across Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Myanmar.
  • Ensure marketing initiatives, operational practices, and collection activities remain compliant with local consumer protection laws, data privacy standards (such as PDPA), and anti-money laundering (AML/CFT) regulations.
  • Manage corporate secretarial matters including statutory filings and governance requirements for regional entities.

What you bring:

In this Regional Legal Counsel – Fintech and Lending position, your proven track record within corporate law or high-growth fintech environments will be invaluable.

  • Hold a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B or JD) from a recognised university with strong academic credentials.
  • Bring at least 4–6 years gained within corporate law firms or in-house legal teams handling commercial litigation or transactional work.
  • Demonstrate prior exposure to fintech environments or lending sectors such as peer-to-peer (P2P) platforms or digital banking; experience in micro-finance is highly advantageous.
  • Showcase exceptional skills in drafting clear legal documents, negotiating favourable terms for commercial agreements, and assessing potential risks with sensitivity to business objectives.
  • Exhibit strong project management abilities that enable you to juggle multiple jurisdictions simultaneously without compromising attention to detail or deadlines.
  • Display adaptability when interpreting foreign regulations quickly—especially those relevant to emerging markets—and translating them into practical guidance for non-legal colleagues.
  • Possess professional fluency in English; proficiency in Bahasa Indonesia is highly desirable given the immediate focus on Indonesian market expansion.
  • Be willing to relocate full-time to Johor Bahru headquarters and undertake regional travel as required by business needs.
