What you'll do:
As a Field Service Engineer based in Penang, you will be entrusted with installing sophisticated analytical instruments at client locations throughout Southeast Asia. Your day-to-day activities will involve not only ensuring these systems operate flawlessly but also empowering customers through comprehensive training sessions tailored to their needs. You will act as a dependable point of contact for troubleshooting complex technical issues—restoring confidence in system performance while minimising downtime. By actively participating in seminars and workshops, you will contribute to building a vibrant user community around these advanced technologies. Your meticulous preparation before each visit ensures that repairs are completed efficiently on the first attempt whenever possible. Through clear communication and proactive advice on upgrades or new services, you will help clients maximise their investment in these innovative solutions. Additionally, your detailed reporting will drive improvements across products and processes while supporting broader commercial objectives.
- Install and ensure the correct operation of advanced Nano Analysis systems at customer sites across Southeast Asia, providing thorough on-site training to empower users in system operation and care.
- Troubleshoot and repair assigned systems efficiently, restoring them to full operational status according to performance specifications while maintaining cost-effectiveness for both the company and the customer.
- Perform instrument verification following departmental policies and procedures, ensuring all equipment meets rigorous quality standards.
- Promote maintenance contracts and service products by assisting sales teams during pre-sales demonstrations, seminars, and other promotional activities.
- Maintain excellent relationships with customers and OEM partners by providing regular updates, technical guidance, and acting as a trusted technical resource within the industry.
- Organise and present seminars, user-groups, workshops, and attend third-party events as required to foster community engagement and share product knowledge.
- Prepare thoroughly for each site visit by coordinating with suppliers and ensuring all necessary tools, parts, and resources are available for first-time resolution of issues.
- Advise customers on available upgrades, support contracts, options, and keep them informed about the latest product developments.
- Initiate detailed field service reports after every customer interaction to document issues encountered, solutions provided, and feedback for continuous improvement.
- Support marketing efforts by sharing market intelligence gathered during customer interactions and assisting in knowledge transfer through internal training sessions.

To succeed as a Field Service Engineer in this role, your educational foundation in material science or engineering equips you with the theoretical understanding needed for complex problem-solving. Your practical experience handling Raman Microscopy or Atomic Force Microscopy means you can quickly diagnose issues on-site while communicating clearly with users who may have varying levels of technical expertise. - A degree in Material Science or Engineering is essential; holding a Master’s or PhD qualification would be highly regarded for this position.
- Proven experience working hands-on with Raman Microscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy is required; familiarity with SEM, EDS, EBSD is considered advantageous.
- Demonstrated background in field-based roles involving analytical instruments within nanotechnology environments such as test/repair/service/applications support.
- Excellent English language skills (spoken and written) are necessary for effective communication with diverse stakeholders across the region.
- Solid PC literacy encompassing both hardware troubleshooting and software applications relevant to scientific instrumentation.
- Possession of a clean driving licence is important due to travel requirements; willingness to travel extensively (up to 60%) without restrictions on overseas assignments is essential.
- Commercial awareness or experience supporting sales initiatives is desirable; ability to demonstrate AFM/Raman/EDS/EBSD/WDS/Nanomanipulators/GIS would be beneficial.
- Self-motivation combined with adaptability enables you to respond flexibly to changing customer needs while maintaining high standards of service delivery.
