Mechanical Design Engineer
An exceptional opportunity awaits a Mechanical Design Engineer to join a globally recognised industrial automation group as they expand their operations in Penang, Malaysia.
This role is perfect for those who are passionate about making a tangible impact at the early stages of a new site setup, offering you the chance to work on international projects and collaborate closely with experienced engineering teams from headquarters. You will be involved in the full project lifecycle, from concept design through to factory acceptance testing, ensuring your expertise shapes the future of advanced manufacturing solutions across medical devices, precision equipment, and more. With clear pathways for career progression towards technical leadership or management roles, this position offers not only professional growth but also the stability and support of an organisation with ambitious regional expansion plans. If you are looking for a role that values your technical skills, encourages cross-regional teamwork, and provides comprehensive benefits within a supportive environment, this is your chance to take the next step in your engineering career.
What you'll do:
As a Mechanical Design Engineer based in Penang, you will play a pivotal role in shaping innovative automation solutions for global clients. Your day-to-day activities will involve working collaboratively with both local colleagues and international teams to deliver high-quality mechanical designs tailored to specific project requirements. You will be responsible for adapting existing concepts to local manufacturing needs, ensuring all designs meet rigorous internal standards while managing documentation meticulously. Your ability to provide hands-on support during assembly and commissioning phases will be crucial in resolving challenges efficiently. Success in this role will come from your commitment to delivering accurate designs on schedule, your willingness to engage openly in cross-regional collaboration, and your dedication to maintaining best practices in documentation control. By contributing your expertise at every stage of the project lifecycle—from initial concept through final acceptance—you will help drive the success of both individual projects and the broader organisational mission.
- Participate actively in technical evaluation and concept design phases for new automation and customised equipment projects, ensuring feasibility and completeness of proposed solutions.
- Support sales teams by providing technical clarification during quotation preparation and identifying potential design risks while proposing effective mitigation strategies.
- Adapt headquarter designs to suit local manufacturing conditions, optimising for efficiency and compliance with internal engineering standards.
- Independently execute 3D mechanical designs and produce detailed 2D drawings using industry-standard software such as SolidWorks, Inventor, or AutoCAD.
- Manage project schedules by completing design tasks on time while maintaining high levels of accuracy and controlling any necessary engineering changes throughout the process.
- Engage in regular design reviews to ensure alignment with corporate VDA design processes and internal quality benchmarks.
- Coordinate closely with headquarter mechanical teams for technical alignment, synchronising project progress and participating in cross-regional design review meetings.
- Ensure documentation version consistency by maintaining up-to-date records on servers and supporting standardisation initiatives within the department.
- Provide on-site support during assembly and commissioning phases, assisting with troubleshooting mechanical issues and participating in customer technical discussions during factory acceptance tests (FAT).
- Complete thorough technical summaries after FATs and contribute to continuous improvement by analysing project outcomes and sharing insights with the wider team.
What you bring:
To excel as a Mechanical Design Engineer in this expanding operation, you will bring not only solid academic credentials but also substantial hands-on experience designing automation systems or bespoke machinery. Your background should reflect proficiency with leading CAD tools alongside familiarity with core mechanical subsystems such as pneumatics and motion control. Beyond technical prowess, your interpersonal skills will enable you to communicate clearly across cultural boundaries—facilitating smooth collaboration between local teams and overseas counterparts. Your approach should be methodical yet adaptable; you thrive when balancing multiple priorities while upholding meticulous standards of documentation. A genuine enthusiasm for sharing knowledge and supporting others’ success will make you an invaluable member of this growing team. Ultimately, your blend of practical know-how, collaborative spirit, attention to detail, and readiness for occasional travel will set you apart as an ideal candidate ready to contribute meaningfully from day one.
- A bachelor’s degree or higher qualification in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline is essential for this position.
- At least five years’ proven experience working on automation or customised equipment design projects is required to ensure you can handle complex assignments independently.
- Proficiency in using SolidWorks, Inventor, or AutoCAD for both 3D modelling and 2D detailing is vital for producing precise engineering outputs.
- A strong understanding of pneumatic systems, motion mechanisms, structural frameworks, and fixture design is necessary for developing robust solutions.
- Experience working on full-line or large-scale equipment projects will be highly regarded as it demonstrates your capability to manage comprehensive assignments.
- Excellent communication skills in English—and ideally Mandarin—are important for effective participation in technical discussions across regions.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within diverse teams is key for fostering positive relationships with colleagues locally and internationally.
- Strong problem-solving abilities are needed to address challenges during assembly, commissioning, or customer interactions effectively.
- A willingness to travel when required ensures flexibility in supporting project delivery at various locations as needed.
