Engineering Lead Manager

Save job

* Be the founding technical leader in Kuala Lumpur, responsible for establishing best practices and building a high-performing engineering team from the ground up. * Enjoy flexible working opportunities and direct collaboration with international teams, ensuring your voice is heard at the highest levels of decision-making.

A global leader in investment and trading infrastructure is seeking an Engineering Lead Manager to establish and drive the technical vision for their new engineering and operations centre in Kuala Lumpur. This is a rare opportunity to become the founding technical hire, setting the standard for all future technology appointments while shaping the core systems that power cross-border financial services for clients worldwide. You will play a pivotal role in reviewing, rebuilding, and leading the development of robust, regulated platforms that underpin a business trusted by over 300 financial institutions across more than 30 countries. The organisation offers a collaborative environment where your expertise will directly influence both local and global technology strategy, with significant opportunities for professional growth, team building, and direct engagement with senior stakeholders. Flexible working opportunities and a commitment to ongoing training ensure you can thrive while making a lasting impact on the future of financial technology.

What you'll do:

As Engineering Lead Manager, you will be entrusted with full responsibility for evaluating current systems, identifying improvement opportunities, and driving architectural transformation across critical financial platforms. Your daily activities will involve deep dives into complex codebases using Java and Python, mapping out dependencies and technical debt while collaborating closely with global colleagues to co-design next-generation solutions. You will guide your team through agile delivery cycles—planning sprints, conducting code reviews, unblocking challenges—and ensure every line of code meets rigorous regulatory standards. By mentoring engineers as they join this newly established centre, you will cultivate a culture of excellence rooted in knowledge sharing and mutual support. Your ability to communicate clearly with both local staff and international executives will be key as you report on progress and shape long-term technology strategy.

  • Systematically review all existing codebases to map system functions, component interactions, data models, and areas of technical debt.
  • Produce comprehensive inventories of codebases and technical debt to inform strategic planning for platform rebuilds.
  • Develop detailed integration and API dependency maps to document system calls, formats, error handling processes, and points of failure.
  • Co-author architectural recommendations for platform rebuilds based on thorough reviews and requirements gathered from subject matter experts in wealth management.
  • Initiate and lead the hiring process for additional engineering team members as the centre grows.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations of the Kuala Lumpur engineering team including sprint planning, code reviews, technical guidance, and delivery cadence management.
  • Take ownership of technical architecture decisions to ensure platforms meet production standards required by regulated financial systems.
  • Act as the primary technical liaison between the Kuala Lumpur team and global technology leadership.
  • Provide regular programme delivery updates to executive stakeholders on progress against objectives.
  • Mentor and develop engineering talent within the team to foster growth, knowledge sharing, and a supportive culture.

What you bring:

To excel as Engineering Lead Manager, you will bring proven experience architecting or maintaining sophisticated financial transaction systems within regulated environments. Your background should include deep familiarity with Java-based frameworks like Spring Boot alongside proficiency in Python; exposure to C# or Node.js would further enhance your versatility. A strong command of data modelling principles—particularly across Microsoft SQL Server and Aurora PostgreSQL—will enable you to design robust schemas supporting complex order flows. Your AWS expertise should extend beyond basic usage to encompass infrastructure evaluation and architectural planning. As an effective communicator fluent in English, you are comfortable engaging with both local engineers and international executives alike. Experience mentoring teams or guiding junior developers is vital as you nurture talent within this growing centre. Additional strengths such as FIX protocol fluency or prior work on event-driven architectures will set you apart as an invaluable contributor.

  • Direct hands-on experience building or maintaining order management systems, execution management systems, or financial transaction processing platforms is essential for success in this role.
  • Proficiency in reading and reasoning about production codebases written in Java (including Spring Boot and QuickFIX/J) as well as Python; familiarity with C# and Node.js is highly valued.
  • Demonstrated expertise in strong data modelling across relational databases such as Microsoft SQL Server and Aurora PostgreSQL; ability to interpret existing schemas and design replacements is crucial.
  • Solid AWS experience sufficient to evaluate current infrastructure components and produce actionable recommendations for platform rebuilds.
  • Excellent English communication skills—both written and spoken—are required for effective collaboration with global stakeholders.
  • Prior experience leading or technically mentoring small engineering teams is necessary to foster growth within the new centre.
  • Hands-on experience with FIX protocol—including reading/debugging message logs—is strongly valued for understanding order/execution flows.
  • Familiarity with event-driven architectures using AWS EventBridge, Step Functions, or Lambda is advantageous when designing resilient transaction processing workflows.
  • Experience conducting formal technology reviews or architecture assessments will help guide strategic decisions during platform transformation initiatives.
  • Previous involvement in establishing technology teams from scratch is highly regarded as you build out this new operation.
