Data Support Assistant Manager
An exciting opportunity awaits for a Data Support Assistant Manager in Kuala Lumpur, where your expertise will be pivotal in ensuring the seamless operation of critical banking and financial systems. This role offers you the chance to work at the heart of a highly collaborative technology and operations function, supporting both physical and digital banking services across multiple regions.
What you'll do:
As a Data Support Assistant Manager based in Kuala Lumpur, you will immerse yourself in a dynamic environment where your primary focus is on ensuring the reliability and efficiency of essential banking applications. Your day-to-day responsibilities will involve providing expert support to business users by addressing their queries with care and attention. You will investigate incidents reported by both users and automated monitoring tools, utilising your analytical skills to reverse-engineer complex queries or reports. By delving into SQL code or ETL pipelines, you will trace data flows from source systems through transformation layers to final outputs. Your keen eye for detail will help you validate data accuracy in financial reports while performing root cause analyses that drive lasting improvements. Working hand-in-hand with development teams, you will help implement robust solutions that enhance system stability. Additionally, you will participate in capacity management activities—monitoring current performance metrics while forecasting future needs—and contribute to disaster recovery exercises or infrastructure upgrades as required. Beyond daily support duties, you may also take on management reporting tasks or assist with centrally driven projects that further strengthen the organisation’s technology landscape.
- Provide comprehensive application support to business users by responding promptly to queries and requests, ensuring all issues are followed through to proper closure.
- Work diligently towards timely resolution of reported incidents—including failures, user queries, and event alerts—while meeting established service level targets.
- Reverse-engineer user queries and reports to uncover underlying data logic, source systems, and transformation rules for accurate issue diagnosis.
- Analyse complex SQL queries, stored procedures, and data models to trace data lineage and ensure integrity across systems.
- Review and troubleshoot ETL pipelines using tools such as Informatica and SSIS to identify data quality issues or performance bottlenecks.
- Support rigorous data validation, reconciliation efforts, and root cause analysis for discrepancies found in financial reports.
- Perform thorough root cause analysis on incidents to recommend permanent solutions that prevent recurrence and minimise operational impact.
- Proactively manage all incidents and problems by prioritising issues based on severity and escalating them appropriately when necessary.
- Collaborate closely with development teams to identify effective resolutions for issues and facilitate smooth transitions of releases into production environments.
- Adopt standardised incident and problem management workflows—including timely ticket logging, change management processes, and quality communications regarding impacts.
What you bring:
To excel as a Data Support Assistant Manager in this role, you will bring a wealth of practical experience gained from supporting complex application environments within the banking or financial services sector. Your background should include significant exposure to managing ETL processes—analysing job logs or troubleshooting pipeline errors—as well as deep familiarity with major database platforms such as Teradata or Oracle. You are adept at interpreting technical documentation and translating user requirements into actionable insights at the database level. Your ability to communicate clearly allows you to work seamlessly with colleagues from diverse backgrounds—whether they are business users seeking assistance or developers collaborating on solutions. A solid grasp of regulatory reporting standards ensures your work aligns with industry expectations while your commitment to best practices in incident management helps maintain high service levels. With your analytical mindset and attention to detail, you consistently deliver reliable results even under pressure. Your willingness to participate in broader organisational initiatives—such as disaster recovery planning or capacity forecasting—demonstrates your dedication to continuous improvement.
- A degree in computer science, engineering or related discipline is required for this role.
- At least five years’ experience working within application development or support environments focused on banking finance systems, ETL processes, data warehousing or business intelligence solutions is essential.
- Demonstrated proficiency with Unix/Windows platforms alongside batch scheduling tools such as Control-M is expected.
- Advanced database query skills using Teradata, Oracle or MS SQL are mandatory for success in this position.
- Hands-on experience with BI toolsets including MS Power BI (PBI), SSAS as well as ETL tools like Informatica is highly desirable.
- A strong understanding of banking products, financial instruments and regulatory reporting requirements is crucial for effective performance.
- Ability to read technical documentation—including data dictionaries—and interpret ETL job logs accurately is important.
- Familiarity with Hadoop Big Data environments (Cloudera CDH 5.8+), Hive or AS400 platforms would be advantageous.
- Excellent communication skills combined with proven interpersonal abilities are needed to collaborate effectively across teams.
- Experience applying ITIL or similar frameworks within incident/problem management workflows is considered beneficial.
