AVP, Legal (Banking & FInnace)

An established international financial institution is seeking an experienced legal professional to lead and provide strategic legal advisory support across its Malaysian operations. This is a high-visibility role offering broad exposure to banking, commercial contracts, technology initiatives, governance, regulatory matters, and risk management within a dynamic and internationally connected environment.

The successful candidate will serve as a trusted legal advisor to senior stakeholders, ensuring that the business operates within a robust legal and regulatory framework while supporting commercial growth and strategic initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide timely and practical legal advice on a wide range of banking products and services, including both conventional and Islamic banking matters.
• Act as a trusted business partner to internal stakeholders by identifying legal risks and delivering commercially sound solutions.
• Draft, review, negotiate and advise on a broad spectrum of commercial agreements, including:
• Technology and digital services contracts
• Vendor and outsourcing agreements
• Intra-group service arrangements
• Consultancy and operational agreements
• Monitor and interpret legal, regulatory and industry developments, providing proactive guidance on their potential impact to the business.
• Manage and monitor legal processes, including court orders, regulatory requests and external counsel engagements where required.
• Partner closely with Compliance, Risk, Operations, Technology and Business teams on strategic projects and initiatives.
• Lead legal awareness programmes and training sessions to strengthen legal and regulatory knowledge across the organisation.
• Assist the Head of Legal on strategic legal matters and other responsibilities as assigned.

Ideal Candidate

• Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or equivalent professional legal qualification.
• Called to the Bar and/or holding a Certificate in Legal Practice (CLP) or equivalent qualification.
• Approximately 8-10 years of post-qualification experience gained in reputable law firms, financial institutions, or a combination of both.
• Strong understanding of banking law, contract law, financial services regulations and corporate legal matters.
• Exposure to in-house legal work within a bank or financial institution would be highly advantageous.
• Experience reviewing and negotiating commercial, technology and outsourcing agreements.
• Sound legal judgement with the ability to balance legal risk and commercial objectives.
• Strong stakeholder management, communication and influencing skills.
• Ability to work independently while partnering effectively with senior management and cross-functional teams.
• Highly analytical, detail-oriented and solutions-driven.
