Save job

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Applied Research and Development, Quality Control and Analytics Manager to join a forward-thinking organisation in Penang, dedicated to advancing product innovation and excellence across the Southeast Asian region.

This pivotal role is designed for someone who thrives on connecting research with real-world applications, ensuring that new products are developed with both scientific rigour and market relevance. You will be at the heart of cross-functional collaboration, working closely with Sales, Application Technology, and Marketing teams to identify emerging opportunities, oversee seamless product introductions, and translate research outcomes into tangible business growth. The position also offers the chance to lead a skilled QC & Analytics team, upholding the highest standards in laboratory practice while fostering a culture of continuous improvement. If you are passionate about driving impactful change through applied science and enjoy nurturing talent within a supportive environment, this is your chance to make a significant contribution.

  • Play a key role in shaping innovative product development strategies by leading applied research projects that directly impact business growth and customer satisfaction across Southeast Asia.
  • Collaborate with diverse teams including Sales, Application Technology, and Marketing to ensure research findings are effectively integrated into new products and services, enhancing organisational success.
  • Lead a dedicated Quality Control & Analytics team, maintaining compliance with international standards such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 17025 while promoting best practices in laboratory operations.

What you'll do:

As an Applied Research and Development, Quality Control and Analytics Manager based in Penang, you will play a central role in bridging scientific discovery with commercial application. Your day-to-day activities will involve managing multiple applied research projects aimed at developing innovative products tailored for the Southeast Asian market. You will work collaboratively with internal teams to identify new application opportunities while ensuring that all research outcomes are seamlessly integrated into R&D activities. In addition to overseeing the introduction of new products, you will guide the QC & Analytics team in upholding rigorous quality standards throughout all stages of production. Your responsibilities will extend from investigating technical challenges—such as residue analysis on electronic components—to developing sustainable treatment methods for chemical waste. By preparing comprehensive reports and sharing insights across departments, you will help establish a feedback loop between market demand and R&D efforts. Your leadership will be instrumental in fostering a culture of continuous improvement within both research and quality control functions.

  • Oversee the execution of applied research projects from conception through completion, ensuring alignment with customer requirements and organisational objectives.
  • Allocate resources efficiently based on project needs, including equipment operation analysis and incorporating customer feedback into ongoing initiatives.
  • Investigate residues on circuit boards, components or copper substrates by interpreting results, analysing data, and developing effective solutions for industry challenges.
  • Evaluate cleanliness of surfaces and interfaces of various substances while proposing requirements for filling materials on these interfaces to meet stringent quality standards.
  • Develop economic and environmentally friendly treatment methods for chemical wastewater generated during production processes to support sustainability goals.
  • Conduct comprehensive studies of cleaning methods such as spray, ultrasonic, and jet techniques to optimise manufacturing processes.
  • Prepare detailed reports at each stage of research projects and participate in disseminating achievements through publications or presentations as required by journals or stakeholders.
  • Coordinate with overseas teams to complete collaborative research projects by providing guidance and support according to established project plans.
  • Recommend practical solutions for customer complaints or issues within the Application Technology department by leveraging deep understanding of product applications.
  • Lead the QC & Analytics team in qualifying materials and suppliers, establishing robust procedures compliant with EU & US standards, conducting routine testing in line with ISO certifications, maintaining lab equipment accuracy, updating SOPs, validating analytical methods, ensuring safety compliance (OSHA), and initiating ISO 17025 certification.

What you bring:

To excel as an Applied Research and Development, Quality Control and Analytics Manager you will bring extensive experience from roles focused on applied science within industrial settings—ideally involving wet chemistry or related disciplines. Your academic background should include at least a Bachelor’s degree (preferably higher) in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering. You have demonstrated your ability to manage complex projects involving multiple stakeholders while maintaining high standards of analytical rigour. Your interpersonal skills enable you to communicate intricate technical details effectively across different audiences—from laboratory staff through to commercial partners—ensuring everyone remains aligned towards common goals. Experience working under internationally recognised quality frameworks such as ISO 9001/14001/17025 is highly desirable; familiarity with EU & US production standards would further strengthen your profile. Above all else your commitment to continuous improvement coupled with sensitivity towards environmental sustainability ensures that every solution you develop delivers value not only for customers but also for broader society.

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemistry, Applied Science, Chemical Engineering or equivalent qualification is essential for this role.
  • A minimum of 10 years’ proven experience in applied research is required; candidates with a background in wet chemistry are particularly encouraged to apply.
  • Experience within the semiconductor or electronics manufacturing industry would be advantageous but is not mandatory for consideration.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while guiding cross-functional teams towards shared objectives is highly valued.
  • Excellent analytical skills combined with proficiency in advanced research methodologies and statistical analysis tools are necessary for success.
  • Strong communication skills are needed to convey complex technical concepts clearly to diverse stakeholders both internally and externally.
  • Proven track record of translating research findings into practical applications or commercially viable solutions is expected from ideal candidates.
  • Commercial acumen that enables you to propose economically feasible solutions tailored to customer needs will set you apart.
  • Experience dealing directly with customers—including listening actively and building rapport—is preferred given the client-facing aspects of this position.
