What you'll do:
As a Senior Mechanical Engineer based in Simpang Ampat, Pulau Pinang, you will play a pivotal role within a highly collaborative R&D team responsible for developing customer-specific prototypes and small series. Your day-to-day responsibilities will involve leading new product development activities from concept through prototype creation, applying your technical expertise to drive innovation in automated liquid handling systems. You will conduct iterative hands-on design work in the prototype workshop, ensuring each adaptation meets stringent performance criteria. By leveraging modern methodologies, you will generate solutions tailored to client needs while performing detailed analyses such as tolerance stack-ups and FEA simulations. Your role also encompasses driving DFMEA and DV&V processes to uphold rigorous quality standards. Maintaining thorough project documentation is essential as you collaborate with both internal colleagues and external partners. Regular engagement with international teams will broaden your perspective and enhance project outcomes. Applying value engineering principles alongside advanced CAD tools will enable you to deliver cost-effective yet high-quality designs. Supporting regulatory compliance through ISO 13485 processes further ensures the integrity of your work. Success in this role requires not only technical proficiency but also strong interpersonal skills, adaptability, and a commitment to shared goals within a nurturing environment.
- Lead diverse new product development initiatives by contributing technical expertise throughout all stages of R&D projects from initial concept through to prototype realisation.
- Conduct hands-on design iterations and implement small adaptations directly within the prototype workshop to ensure optimal performance and functionality.
- Define and apply modern development methodologies to generate forward-looking solutions that meet customer-specific requirements for advanced instrumentation platforms.
- Perform tolerance stack-up analysis and geometric dimensioning & tolerancing (GD&T) for new designs while selecting appropriate materials and conducting finite element analysis (FEA) or simulation as needed.
- Drive Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) as well as design verification & validation (DV&V) activities to ensure robust quality standards for new products.
- Maintain comprehensive project documentation while collaborating closely with internal stakeholders, external customers, and development partners to achieve project goals.
- Engage with international R&D teams in Switzerland and the US to share insights, align objectives, and deliver innovative results across global projects.
- Apply value engineering principles and design for manufacturing (DfM) strategies to optimise product cost-effectiveness without compromising quality or reliability.
- Utilise advanced CAD tools such as Creo/Windchill and SolidWorks to create precise mechanical designs for complex mechanisms, motion systems, robotics, or fluidics.
- Support the implementation of ISO 13485 design control processes where applicable to ensure compliance with industry regulations.
What you bring:
The ideal candidate for the Senior Mechanical Engineer position brings extensive experience in mechanical engineering roles focused on research & development or new product creation within regulated sectors like MedTech or life sciences instrumentation. Your academic background—whether bachelor's or master's level—provides a strong foundation for tackling complex engineering challenges. You have successfully guided products from concept through prototyping into final design transfer stages rather than simply maintaining existing products. Your hands-on expertise covers precision mechanism design involving motion systems, robotics, or fluidics where accuracy is paramount. Familiarity with ISO 13485 processes enhances your ability to navigate regulatory landscapes effectively. You excel at applying value engineering principles alongside DfM strategies that balance cost-efficiency with uncompromised quality. Advanced skills in CAD tools such as Creo/Windchill and SolidWorks empower you to produce intricate mechanical designs tailored to demanding applications. Your interpersonal abilities allow you to thrive within collaborative teams while embracing both technical tasks and entrepreneurial opportunities. Proficiency in English supports seamless communication across global networks. Above all, your enthusiasm for innovation drives you to solve problems creatively within dynamic research environments.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or equivalent qualification demonstrating solid academic foundation.
- Proven practical experience as a Mechanical Engineer specialising in R&D or new product development within MedTech, life sciences instrumentation, or other regulated industries.
- Demonstrated ability to take products from initial concept through prototype development to successful design transfer rather than focusing solely on sustaining or manufacturing engineering of existing products.
- Hands-on experience designing precision mechanisms including motion systems, robotics, or fluidics that require meticulous attention to detail.
- Familiarity with ISO 13485 design control processes is considered advantageous for ensuring regulatory compliance during product development.
- Strong know-how in value engineering techniques as well as design for manufacturing (DfM) strategies aimed at optimising production efficiency without sacrificing quality.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team while taking on both technical responsibilities and entrepreneurial challenges within project environments.
- Advanced proficiency using CAD software such as Creo/Windchill and SolidWorks for creating accurate mechanical designs suited to complex applications.
- Excellent written and spoken English skills enabling effective communication across multicultural teams located internationally.
- A passion for innovation coupled with talent for problem-solving in fast-evolving research settings.
