A leading hyperscale data centre developer is seeking a High Voltage Substation Subject Matter Expert to play a pivotal role in the planning, concept development, detailed design, and delivery of high-voltage substations ranging from 275 kV to 11 kV. What you'll do:
As a High Voltage Substation Subject Matter Expert based in Bukit Jalil, you will be entrusted with overseeing the full lifecycle of high-voltage substation projects supporting hyperscale data centre developments. Your day-to-day responsibilities will include developing robust technical designs that meet stringent reliability standards while ensuring regulatory compliance across multiple Southeast Asian jurisdictions. You will collaborate closely with utilities and project partners to facilitate grid interconnections that underpin large-scale digital infrastructure. By integrating advanced automation architectures such as IEC 61850-based systems and ensuring seamless interoperability between substations and data centre management platforms, you will help drive operational excellence. Your expertise in renewable energy policy integration will enable the organisation to align its power infrastructure with evolving energy transition roadmaps. Throughout each project phase—from tendering through construction to commissioning—you will provide invaluable technical guidance that ensures safe delivery of complex power systems. Your commitment to quality assurance will be instrumental in achieving concurrent maintainability and five-nines availability targets for mission-critical facilities.
- Develop and review concept, basic, and detailed designs for high-voltage substations (275 kV / 115kV/ 132 kV / 33 kV / 11 kV) within hyperscale data centre campuses, ensuring all technical requirements are met.
- Define and validate single line diagrams (SLD), protection philosophies, layout planning, and equipment ratings to address worst-case operating scenarios such as N+1 or 2N contingencies.
- Ensure all designs support concurrent maintainability and meet five-nines (99.999%) availability requirements for critical infrastructure.
- Verify electrical and thermal limits of conductors, transformers, busbars, and switchgear under normal and contingency conditions to guarantee operational reliability.
- Review and validate designs for power transformers including multi-winding configurations, impedance calculations, vector group selection, OLTC range and steps; earthing transformers; neutral grounding schemes; AIS/GIS HV switchgear arrangements; control/protection systems; SCADA integration.
- Conduct comprehensive load flow studies, fault level analysis, protection coordination reviews, arc-flash assessments, underground cable temperature rise evaluations, earthing studies, and lightning protection analyses.
- Define substation automation architectures including IEC 61850-based systems; ensure interoperability between HV substations, data centre BMS/EPMS platforms, and utility SCADA systems.
- Lead grid connection studies and applications with regional utilities (e.g., TNB, PEA, EGAT), ensuring compliance with Grid Code regulations and Bulk Supply/Interconnection Standards across Malaysia, Thailand, and other Southeast Asian jurisdictions.
- Coordinate interfaces with overhead transmission lines (OHL), transmission pylons, cable sealing end structures, and underground HV cable routes for seamless integration into the wider power network.
- Incorporate renewable energy policies into substation designs; support integration of Demand Side Management programmes, Energy Storage Systems (BESS), micro-grids, Combined Cycle Power Plants (CCPP), cogeneration solutions; future-proof designs in alignment with regional energy transition roadmaps.
- Provide technical oversight during main equipment procurement processes (EPC tendering), construction phases, testing/commissioning activities (FATs/SATs), site inspections, technical workshops; oversee energisation stages to ensure successful project delivery.

- Proven experience designing high-voltage substations within the APAC region is essential for this role.
- Electrical Professional Engineer certification with a valid practising certificate is required.
- At least ten years’ experience in design consultancy or within utility/EPC environments is necessary to succeed in this position.
- Comprehensive knowledge of electrical studies including load flow analysis, short circuit calculations, arc flash assessments (Neher McGrath methodology), load calculation techniques, lightning protection strategies, earthing system design principles.
- Demonstrated proficiency in electrical system protection methodologies as well as electrical power monitoring systems (EPMS) and building management systems (BMS).
- Experience working on hyperscale data centres or micro-electronics facilities—or other critical infrastructure—is highly desirable.
- Fluency in both English and Mandarin is required for effective communication across diverse project teams.
- Advanced skills using AutoCAD for drafting purposes alongside ETAP/SKM/CYME tools for electrical design analysis are mandatory.
- Willingness to travel regularly in order to oversee substation construction activities at various sites is expected.
- Openness to relocation based on project requirements demonstrates flexibility.
