A leading organisation in Kuala Lumpur is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to join their growing data team. This is an exceptional opportunity for you to take ownership of enterprise-grade data platforms, driving the design, build, and scaling of robust solutions that empower data-driven decision-making across the business. You will be at the heart of technical leadership, collaborating with analytics, product, and business teams to deliver high-quality, reliable data infrastructure.
What you'll do:
As a Senior Data Engineer based in Kuala Lumpur, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the organisation’s data landscape. Your day-to-day activities will involve architecting scalable solutions that underpin critical business functions while fostering collaboration between technical teams and key stakeholders. You will be responsible for developing robust processes that ensure high standards of reliability and performance across all data platforms. By enabling efficient access to actionable insights through advanced analytics tools and methodologies, you will help drive informed decision-making at every level. Success in this role requires a commitment to best practices in engineering as well as a passion for mentoring others—your contributions will not only enhance operational efficiency but also cultivate a culture of shared learning within the team.
- Design, build, and maintain scalable, secure, and high-performance data pipelines and architectures that support diverse business needs.
- Lead the development of robust ETL/ELT processes for both structured and unstructured data sources, ensuring seamless integration across systems.
- Ensure availability, reliability, and scalability of the data platform by meeting defined service level agreements (SLAs) and maintaining rigorous data quality standards.
- Optimise data pipelines, storage solutions, and query performance for large-scale datasets to enable efficient processing and analysis.
- Enable efficient consumption of data by analytics, business intelligence (BI), and data science teams through well-architected solutions.
- Collaborate closely with stakeholders from various departments to translate complex business requirements into effective technical data solutions.
- Perform detailed data analysis to uncover actionable insights that support strategic business decisions across the organisation.
- Develop and support dashboards, reports, and self-service analytics capabilities that empower users throughout the company.
- Apply advanced statistical methods and data modelling techniques to support predictive analytics and other sophisticated use cases.
- Drive best practices in all aspects of data engineering including documentation, version control, testing procedures, and monitoring systems.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior data engineers within the team.
What you bring:
To excel as a Senior Data Engineer in this organisation, you will bring proven experience architecting scalable solutions using modern technologies such as Hadoop, Spark, Kafka, Airflow/dbt, AWS/Azure/GCP, Python/Java, Tableau/Power BI. Your ability to manage complex datasets while ensuring optimal performance will be essential for supporting mission-critical analytics initiatives. A strong foundation in SQL coupled with deep knowledge of database systems enables you to tackle challenges related to transformation processes or workload management confidently. Your analytical skills allow you to extract valuable insights from raw information—helping shape strategic decisions throughout the company. Collaboration is key: your interpersonal abilities make it easy for you to work alongside diverse teams while providing mentorship that helps others grow professionally. Experience with cloud-native architectures or compliance frameworks would further strengthen your profile; if you have led junior engineers or contributed to DevOps practices before this will be seen as an advantage.
- Demonstrated expertise in SQL with hands-on experience across multiple database technologies including relational and analytical systems.
- Proven track record building, optimising, and maintaining large-scale data pipelines as well as managing complex datasets effectively.
- Solid understanding of core concepts such as data modelling, transformation processes, workload management, and system architecture.
- Experience working with streaming or messaging systems like Kafka alongside big data stores such as Hadoop or Spark.
- Analytical mindset with a history of extracting meaningful insights from intricate datasets using statistical methods or modelling techniques.
- Background supporting BI and analytics use cases in production environments where reliability is paramount.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams on shared objectives.
- Hands-on experience with big data technologies (Hadoop, Spark), pipeline orchestration tools (Airflow or dbt), cloud platforms (AWS/Azure/GCP), programming languages (Python preferred; Java or similar), and BI tools (Tableau/Power BI).
- Statistical analysis skills combined with practical experience applying these techniques in real-world scenarios are highly desirable.
- Nice to Have: Experience designing cloud-native or hybrid data platforms; exposure to governance/security/compliance frameworks; prior mentoring or leadership experience; familiarity with DevOps practices such as CI/CD or Infrastructure as Code.
