Cocoa Senior Trader

A top producer of cocoa and chocolate is seeking a Cocoa Senior Trader to be based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This person will be reporting directly to the Cocoa Trading Manager and will be in charge of ensuring that facilities across various locations are fully operational and well stocked through physical trading, as well as managing trading activities (such as hedging trades to reduce physical risk).

About the Cocoa Senior Trader Role:
The Cocoa Senior Trader will be responsible for overseeing a group of suppliers and conducting transactions that secure an adequate supply of cocoa that meets production needs in terms of timing, quantity, volume, and cost. The person in this role will buy and sell cocoa from and to suppliers, processors, and country elevators. They will also be expected to explain market conditions to both internal and external parties on a regular basis, and lead the company in crafting and implementing strategies related to futures trading.

Key Responsibilities:

• Act as the primary contact for all matters related to futures trading
• Manage and reduce daily physical risks from regular business activities on both the buying and selling side by hedging
• Collaborate with logistics, transportation, quality assurance, customer managers, and credit managers to ensure smooth execution of trades
• Regularly update and optimise risk management and trading strategies to meet profitability targets, and lead the trade team in executing these plans
• Create market reports, position reports, and profit and loss statements based on data and specialised reports collected by junior team members
• Interact directly with customers, suppliers, and business partners to develop business solutions to meet their needs
• Independently handle complex issues with minimal supervision and only escalate the most complex issues to higher management
• Travel regularly to rural and developing areas as necessary

To excel in this role, it is important to have experience as a seasoned trader who has navigated various market conditions such as downturns, supply shortages, and peak seasons, and remains unfazed by uncertainty. Additionally, having a basic understanding of different trading techniques (such as inverse trades and spread trades) and a passion for staying informed about market developments is crucial for maintaining sharpness in the role.

Key Requirements:

• Degree tertiary qualification in supply chain, mathematics, or related business degree
• Four to seven years of experience in dealing with financial derivatives for different commodities (vegetable oil, petrochemical, metals)
• Three to five years in physical trading environment with hedging and position-taking responsibilities
• Analytical skills with experience in risk management systems is an advantage
