What you'll do:
As a Legal and Compliance Officer based in Kuala Lumpur, you will immerse yourself in a diverse range of responsibilities that span contract management, regulatory liaison, policy development, training delivery, litigation support, data privacy oversight, and more. Success in this role requires not only technical proficiency but also strong interpersonal skills—enabling you to build trusted relationships internally while representing the organisation’s interests externally.
- Drafting and reviewing contracts with clients, vendors, insurers, third parties, as well as providing ad-hoc support for escalations requiring legal expertise within the Asia Regional Client Contracting team.
- Acting as a point of escalation for legal and regulatory queries by assisting the local client contracts champion in resolving complex issues efficiently.
- Supporting the business in responding to client Requests for Proposals (RFPs) from a legal perspective to ensure all submissions meet regulatory requirements.
- Engaging in contract negotiations that may involve multi-jurisdictional elements, ensuring favourable terms while maintaining compliance with relevant laws.
- Providing comprehensive legal and compliance input for strategic business projects to facilitate informed decision-making at all levels of the organisation.
- Advising on employment law matters to ensure fair treatment of employees and adherence to statutory obligations.
- Supporting litigation matters by preparing documentation, liaising with external counsel, and managing case progress effectively.
- Serving as the primary liaison officer with Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) and other relevant regulatory bodies to maintain open communication channels and timely submission of required notifications or approvals.
- Guiding the business on the application of internal compliance policies at local, regional (Asia), and global levels to foster a culture of ethical conduct.
- Drafting, reviewing, and revising local compliance protocols as needed to address evolving regulatory landscapes or organisational priorities.
- Preparing and delivering engaging training sessions on legal and compliance topics to enhance awareness among staff members at all levels.
- Supporting the compliance review process including entertainment requests, anti-money laundering (AML) checks, and third-party arrangement approvals to mitigate risk exposure.
- Preparing monthly local compliance listings and summaries for board meetings to keep leadership informed of key developments.
- Managing engagement with external legal counsel including cost oversight to ensure value-driven outcomes for the organisation.
- Serving as Data Privacy Officer for Malaysia while supporting regional data privacy initiatives as required.
What you bring:
To excel as a Legal and Compliance Officer in this organisation’s Kuala Lumpur office, your background should reflect substantial experience navigating complex legal frameworks within insurance or financial services settings.
- Qualified Malaysian lawyer with over 8 years of post-qualification experience in legal and compliance roles within in-house insurance environments.
- At least 3 years’ experience practicing in a reputable law firm handling commercial or corporate matters relevant to insurance or financial services sectors.
- Demonstrated expertise managing legal projects involving commercial contracts, new business initiatives, or implementation of compliance programmes within regulated industries.
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively as part of a regional team—fostering positive relationships while also taking initiative when independent action is required.
- Exceptional conscientiousness with meticulous attention to detail when reviewing documents or conducting investigations into regulatory matters.
- Outstanding interpersonal communication skills—both verbal and written—with confidence presenting complex information clearly to diverse audiences.
- Advanced critical thinking abilities combined with sound problem-solving skills that enable effective analysis of multifaceted issues under pressure.
- Self-motivated approach marked by responsibility, adaptability, quick learning capacity, high integrity, professionalism, time management excellence, organisational prowess, prioritisation acumen.
- Excellent command of English and Bahasa Malaysia—enabling seamless communication across multicultural teams.
