Legal Counsel

You will play a pivotal role in contract review and regulatory compliance across Southeast Asia and Greater China, working closely with senior legal counsel and cross-functional teams.

What you'll do:
As Legal Counsel based in Kuala Lumpur, you will be entrusted with a wide range of responsibilities that span contract review for Southeast Asia as well as regulatory compliance initiatives.
- Prepare, structure, review, revise, and draft commercial contracts for Southeast Asia in a timely manner to support business needs.
- Coordinate, liaise, and negotiate commercial contracts with internal stakeholders and clients to ensure mutual understanding and agreement.
- Advise business units on contractual matters, disputes, or other concerns by providing clear guidance rooted in regulatory requirements.
- Review and advise on various legal documents such as leases, employment contracts, demand letters, ensuring compliance with relevant laws.
- Develop and implement effective contract management processes that enhance operational efficiency across the region.
- Collaborate with senior legal counsel and other departments to provide comprehensive legal advice supporting compliance with data privacy, cybersecurity, and industry regulations.
- Research, analyse, and monitor new regulations impacting the recruitment industry and business operations—including but not limited to data protection and cybersecurity—ensuring proactive adaptation.
- Draft necessary documentation related to compliance with data privacy, cyber security, and industrial regulations in partnership with senior legal counsel.
- Maintain an organised legal library for regulatory research conducted and advice given throughout the region for easy reference by the team.
- Support licensing and registration processes within the region by coordinating with relevant authorities as required.
- Liaise with external legal advisers when needed to ensure robust representation of organisational interests.
- Undertake any additional tasks assigned from time to time to support the overall objectives of the legal department.
What you bring:
The ideal candidate for Legal Counsel brings substantial experience gained from working within Common Law jurisdictions—particularly in areas relating to regulatory compliance and contract review. Your background includes hands-on involvement with commercial agreements (including those drafted in Mandarin), as well as exposure to data privacy or cybersecurity matters.
- 4 - 6 PQE qualified lawyer from any Common Law jurisdiction with proven experience handling regulatory matters and contract review over at least three years.
- Demonstrated ability to review Mandarin language contracts or bilingual agreements effectively within a multicultural context.
- Critical thinking skills enabling you to evaluate factual situations thoroughly while identifying key legal issues for analysis under applicable statutes and regulations.
- Exceptional communication abilities that allow you to interact confidentially with stakeholders at all levels across multiple regions.
- Highly organised approach paired with meticulous attention to detail ensures accuracy in all aspects of your work.
- Willingness and flexibility to engage with a variety of legal topics—including compliance matters—in response to evolving business needs.
- Experience advising on data privacy issues is preferred but not mandatory; openness to learning about cybersecurity regulations is encouraged.
- Proven track record of collaborating within teams while supporting shared goals through knowledge exchange and cooperative problem-solving.
- Ability to maintain comprehensive records of regulatory research conducted as well as advice provided for future reference by colleagues.
