Legal Counsel

What you'll do:

As Legal Counsel you will play a pivotal role in protecting the organisation’s interests by providing expert guidance on a wide array of legal issues.

The primary responsibilities are:

• Draft and review agreements to ensure the operating units’ legal rights and interests are protected, minimising any potential risks or breaches of law or contract.
• Prepare comprehensive replies to letters on behalf of operating units, ensuring clarity and accuracy in all communications.
• Compile detailed documentation and reports relating to various legal matters, maintaining meticulous records for future reference.
• Attend court proceedings with external legal counsels, including reviewing and drafting witness statements, statements of defence, and other related court documents. Draft litigation documents for filing in court as well as defence statements for consumer tribunal matters. Update the litigation database regularly with the status of ongoing court actions, ensuring information is current and accessible for the team.
• Provide practical and workable legal advice to operating units whenever questions or concerns arise regarding their specific matters.
• Assist the Head of Legal with delegated tasks, supporting broader departmental objectives as required.
• Review tenancy agreements, supply agreements, services agreements, confidentiality/non-disclosure agreements, and miscellaneous operational contracts with precision.
• Collaborate closely with colleagues across departments to ensure legal compliance and effective risk management throughout the organisation.

What you bring:

To excel as Legal Counsel in this role, you will bring proven experience gained over several years practising law following admission to the Malaysian Bar. Your background should include substantial exposure to drafting complex commercial contracts such as tenancy agreements, supply agreements, service contracts, confidentiality clauses, and other operational documents.

• Degree in Law (LLB Hons) from a recognised institution is essential for this role.
• Admission as Advocate & Solicitor to the Malaysian Bar.
• A minimum of 7 - 10 years’ experience as a Legal or Senior Legal Associate post-admission to the Malaysian Bar is necessary for success in this position.
• Proven experience in drafting and reviewing tenancy agreements, supply agreements, services agreements, confidentiality/non-disclosure agreements, and various operational contracts is highly valued.
• Exceptional attention to detail and meticulousness in handling legal work are key attributes sought after by the client.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in both English and Bahasa Malaysia are required for effective collaboration across teams.
• Ability to provide clear, practical legal advice tailored to operational needs is important for supporting business objectives.
• Experience working collaboratively within a small legal team environment is considered advantageous.
