Senior/Legal Counsel (Corporate Banking)

One of the region’s leading foreign financial institution is seeking a high-calibre Senior Legal Counsel to join their legal department based in Kuala Lumpur.

About the Senior Legal Counsel Role:
Reporting to the DCEO/Head, Co Sec & Corporate Governance, you will be responsible for providing world-class functional banking legal services to the bank’s legal and corporate functions as well as be involved in interactions with all levels of management.

Key Responsibilities:

• Manage the legal aspects associated with the Group, Regional and Country transactions, projects, initiatives including matters that are highly complex or have potential for significant legal, financial and /or reputational impact including oversee all transactional and non-transactional legal work undertaken in respect of the bank
• oversee all legal advice given in respect of the Malaysian entitles including advice given by external counsel and internal legal service
• Supporting the Group, Regional and Country senior management in the execution of business and operational strategies and initiatives, while ensuring that such business/strategies/initiatives are in compliance of local legal and regulatory requirements
• implement strategic legal policies as well as to ensure the exposure to legal and regulatory risk is managed in a commercially sensitive and practical manner
• As a member of the Legal function, coordinate with the other members (and to the extent required, lawyers in other foreign to ensure the support offered to business and support functions is of the highest standard and the support is coordinated
• Manage and monitor disputes, litigation and potential litigation in Malaysia as well as undertake any additional duties as required by Country Head / CEO

This successful candidate must be highly organisational and independent, able to manage diverse stakeholders and work under pressure in a dynamic environment and with at least 6-8 years of PQE.

Key Requirements:

• Preferably with minimum 6-8 years of relevant working experience in-house legal counsel/ or as practicing lawyer. Additional relevant experience in other sectors of banking industry will be considered as an advantage.
• Applicant must possess at least a recognized Bachelor’s Degree in Law or equivalent from a recognized university/higher learning institution.
• Able to effectively communicate in English and Mandarin with all levels of internal stakeholders and external regulators/government departments & agencies.
• Strong self-motivated person who is able work independently with professional communication, interpersonal, negotiation, analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Strategic thinking, business acumen and sound people management.
