Legal Manager

An exciting Legal Manager job has just become available at one of the leading international tobacco companies based in Kuala Lumpur.

About the Legal Manager Role:
Reporting to the Legal Director, you will be the legal advisor for the Malaysia’s, Singapore’s and/or Australia’s markets/business operations. You will also assist the Asia Pacific Regional Legal team in advising on all commercial and regulatory matters, amongst other ancillary matters.

Key Responsibilities:

• Rendering advice and support on various commercial law matters which include but not limited to contracts and commercial issues, corporate governance, leases, industrial relations, labour matters, etc. as well as overseeing and assisting on legal challenges
• Drafting, reviewing, advising and/or negotiating general commercial contracts, e.g. trading, purchasing, supply, service, distribution agreements, etc. as well as arguments in defending the company’s interests and advocating certain corporate positions
• Advising the business on product regulation, including but not limited to reviewing developments and legislation on relevant legal and regulatory matters as well as keeping the business abreast of developments and updates, on employment, data protection, competition, anti-corruption, and other relevant laws to ensure compliance, on packaging and marketing activities as well as on emerging products’ matters and regulatory affairs
• Assisting the Regional legal team on business projects/initiatives such as training, conferences, know-how for the Asia Pacific markets
• Taking on (whenever possible) on corporate secretarial duties and advising the business on corporate governance related issues

To succeed in this Legal Manager role, you will need to have the ability to work effectively and co-operatively with multiple stakeholders as well as to mitigate any legal/commercial risks (if any).

Key Requirements:

• Malaysian qualified lawyer with at least 8 to 10 years’ PQE
• Experience in in drafting and reviewing general commercial contracts, strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, experience in dealing with government and regulatory authorities, working knowledge of commercial law, company law and competition law, effective negotiation skills and the ability to apply knowledge of legal drafting to produce standard business critical
• Basic awareness of Intellectual Property principles (e.g. trademarks, copyright etc.), an awareness of legal and commercial risks and the ability to establish means for managing such risks consistent with business objectives, sound judgement when balancing legal risks against the business benefits
• Dynamic, proactive, and flexible and able to interact confidently with members of the organisation at different levels
