Legal Counsel

One of the leading international financial institutions is looking for a high-calibre candidate for a Legal Counsel job to join their commercial legal team based in Kuala Lumpur.

About the Legal Counsel Role:
Reporting to the Head of Legal, you will be responsible for rendering all range of legal advice, guidance and support to the business units and stakeholders on various legal matters and play a vital role in ensuring the continuous success of the department and company.

Key Responsibilities:

• Preparing, drafting, advising, negotiating and/or vetting global procurement contracts (technology and non-technology) - includes software, market data and subscription licences, escrow agreements, hardware, equipment/device purchases and support / maintenance services, business process outsourcing, professional services arrangements across the global functions and businesses, HR and other functional support services.
• Analysing potential risks involved with specific contract teams and other risk owners, rendering accurate and timely advice and information to stakeholders, as well as keeping the management abreast of relevant and latest policies, procedures, and applicable laws
• Support with continuous improvement initiatives in relation to contract processes, workflow, guidance, playbooks, and templates and provide training on contract legal issues to legal teams and other stakeholders
• Collaborate and coordinate with other legal teams to ensure appropriate overall matter management. Where external counsel is appointed, to manage the engagement, oversee the quality of work and effective delivery of legal support and manage external legal costs
• Effectively and collaboratively identify, escalate, mitigate and resolve risk, conduct and compliance matters and embed the highest standards of ethics, including regulatory and business conduct

To succeed in this Legal Counsel role, you will need to be able to work effectively, be a team player, responsible, personable and have good analytical skills.

Key Requirements:

• Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) with at least five years' relevant legal experience and qualified/practice as an advocate and solicitor/barrister
• Experience in reviewing contracts using contract templates and/or using contract guidance or playbooks, and the ability to draft contract terms to meet requirements
• Strong attention to detail to highlight potential risks in contracts and errors as well as able to work with board members, other senior staff, and persons of different nationalities and from different cultures
• Ability to use initiative and ready to identify issues without being asked and provide advice
• Operate independently with minimal supervision, to prioritise workload and manage conflicting priorities to meet deadlines., have good judgement and strong decision-making skills
• Pragmatic, creative, practical and solution oriented
