What you'll do:

As a Functional Test Development Engineer based in Penang, you will play a pivotal role in shaping engineering services for advanced test solutions across various sectors. Your day-to-day activities will involve collaborating closely with manufacturing, product development, and commercialisation teams to conceptualise and deliver robust testing systems. You will be responsible for designing both hardware and software components of functional tests while ensuring seamless integration into production environments. Your ability to communicate complex technical information clearly will enable you to interact effectively with stakeholders at all levels. By mentoring junior engineers and championing continuous improvement initiatives within the team, you will help cultivate an atmosphere of shared learning and professional excellence. Your contributions will directly influence the quality and reliability of products delivered to customers worldwide.

• Develop engineering and product concepts that are high-quality, cost-appropriate, and tailored to meet customer requirements independently without direct supervision.
• Demonstrate comprehensive understanding of tools and equipment necessary for design creation, analysis, and verification throughout all phases of the product realisation process.
• Participate in proposal development by identifying project tasks, estimating durations, mapping interdependencies, assessing risks, and clarifying assumptions with guidance as needed.
• Communicate effectively with both internal teams and external customers regarding technical aspects of projects using teleconferencing, email, and in-person meetings.
• Design and implement functional test solutions that fulfil customer product requirements by engaging in test specification analysis, hardware design, software development, and mechanical integration.
• Lead system integration activities including software coding, debugging, test system build support, installation, user training, and start-up assistance for new systems.
• Characterise test performance by evaluating coverage, programming/calibration functions, automation capabilities, repeatability, reliability, safety features, ergonomics, and overall supportability.
• Serve as a technical mentor by guiding junior engineers to ensure successful delivery of functional test projects while fostering team growth.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives within the functional test team by sharing best practices and supporting business development efforts such as preparing quotations for new projects.
• Undertake additional responsibilities as assigned to support evolving business needs.

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical/electronic/mechatronic engineering or equivalent with at least five years’ experience in functional test system development.
• Proven track record in developing functional test systems including specification analysis, hardware/software design, integration, debugging, installation, user training, and ongoing support.
• Strong programming skills with proficiency in C++, LabView, TestStand or similar platforms relevant to automated testing environments.
• Expertise in handling measurement instruments such as digital multimeters (DMM), oscilloscopes, controllable power supplies, LCR meters, and other related equipment for precise data acquisition.
• Deep understanding of electrical circuitry principles coupled with the ability to quickly develop technical expertise when exposed to new testing requirements such as Environmental Stress Screening (ESS), PCBA level tests or High-Level Assembly (HLA) tests.
• Excellent analytical abilities combined with strong troubleshooting skills for diagnosing issues during system integration or operation phases.
• Demonstrated capability in providing technical leadership through mentoring junior engineers while fostering a culture of collaboration within cross-functional teams.
• Passion for continuous learning supported by agility in adapting to changing priorities within fast-evolving project landscapes.
• Outstanding verbal and written communication skills essential for effective interaction with colleagues from diverse backgrounds as well as external clients.
• Experience supporting manufacturing functional testers is highly desirable; familiarity with business/market needs for functional test projects is advantageous.
