An exciting opportunity awaits an experienced insurance professional to join a leading global insurer as Assistant Manager Underwriting in Kuala Lumpur. Supporting the Senior Manager, you’ll drive success in Auto, Residential, and Specialty Personal Lines portfolios through underwriting expertise, governance, and achieving financial targets. The role offers a collaborative environment, flexible working culture, ongoing training, and a commitment to nurturing diverse talent.

What you'll do:

As Assistant Manager Underwriting (Auto), you will be at the heart of driving operational excellence within a diverse insurance portfolio. Your day-to-day responsibilities will see you collaborating closely with colleagues across departments to deliver on financial targets while enhancing process efficiency. You will have the opportunity to shape underwriting strategies through data-driven insights, support innovative product launches with your technical acumen, and build lasting partnerships with distribution teams. Success in this role means not only meeting service standards but also proactively identifying areas for improvement in systems and processes. Your ability to balance compliance requirements with business needs will be crucial as you help steer the portfolio towards sustainable growth. This is a role where your input truly matters—your efforts will directly influence both customer satisfaction and organisational success.

  • Contribute as an integral member of the International Personal Lines team to achieve annual financial plans for both revenue growth and profitability across multiple product lines.
  • Enhance operational efficiency by streamlining underwriting processes during risk assessment and acceptance, reducing administrative burdens, and expediting referral or approval cases.
  • Assess and manage portfolio performance through regular review of underwriting referrals while continuously improving processes and procedures to ensure optimal outcomes.
  • Foster strong relationships with distribution channels by providing constructive feedback, engaging in productive discussions, and generating new ideas to support portfolio expansion.
  • Maintain high service standards by ensuring all underwriting work meets agreed turnaround times and consistently delivers quality outcomes for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provide technical support during the development of new product features or coverage wording, including obtaining necessary approvals and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Support system enhancements or maintenance activities related to Auto, Residential, or Specialty Personal Lines products to ensure seamless operations and improved user experience.
  • Ensure timely and accurate submission of internal and external reports by adhering strictly to reporting guidelines and maintaining up-to-date statistics on portfolio performance.
  • Uphold full compliance with local, regional, and global regulatory guidelines—including peer reviews—by implementing best practices in governance throughout all underwriting activities.
  • Undertake any additional duties as assigned that align with your skills and contribute positively to the overall objectives of the department.

What you bring:

To excel as Assistant Manager Underwriting (Auto), you will bring a wealth of experience from the general insurance sector—particularly within motor-focused underwriting roles. Your academic background will underpin your analytical approach while your hands-on expertise allows you to navigate complex portfolios with confidence. You are adept at leveraging technology for data analysis and reporting purposes; your familiarity with SQL or BI tools sets you apart when extracting actionable insights from large datasets. Beyond technical skills, your interpersonal abilities shine through when coordinating projects or presenting findings to stakeholders. You thrive in environments that value continuous learning—always seeking ways to improve processes or enhance service delivery. Your commitment to compliance ensures that all activities adhere strictly to regulatory standards without compromising business agility. Above all else, your collaborative spirit makes you a trusted partner within multidisciplinary teams striving towards common objectives.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint as well as data manipulation or extraction tools such as SQL or business intelligence platforms is essential for effective analysis and reporting.
  • A minimum of six years’ experience within the general insurance industry—preferably focused on motor insurance—with a solid background in underwriting is required for this position.
  • Experience in portfolio management or insurance product pricing is highly recommended as it enables you to provide valuable insights into product performance.
  • Proven ability to coordinate information from various sources while communicating results clearly to relevant stakeholders ensures smooth project execution.
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in an insurance-related field such as Actuarial Science, Statistics, Business Administration, Finance or Management is required; additional professional insurance qualifications are advantageous.
  • Strong planning skills combined with the ability to execute tasks efficiently guarantee timely delivery of results even under tight deadlines.
  • Capacity to transform complex technical analyses into actionable business insights helps simplify challenges for decision-makers across the organisation.
  • A positive attitude focused on continuous improvement fosters an environment where innovation thrives alongside operational excellence.
  • Excellent communication skills paired with an inclusive mindset enable you to collaborate effectively within diverse teams while supporting shared goals.
